Bridge Design & Specifications
The contestants must design and build a truss bridge that must satisfy ALL of the following requirements:
COMPETITION PROPER
Participants
- Registration is open to all students of Mapua especially students taking up any mechanics course for the second term, AY 2014-2015
- Participants are to form groups, minimum of 2 and maximum of 5 persons per group
- The registration fee will be Php500 per group
- Registration fee are strictly NON-REFUNDABLE
Materials & Construction
- The bridge must be built by means of plain popsicle sticks only (500pcs are given to each group).
- Wood glues are the only allowed adhesives to be used.
- The popsicle sticks are allowed to be cut, trimmed and/or sanded whatever way the contestants intend to.
- No other materials are permitted to be used.
Bridge Design & Specifications
The contestants must design and build a truss bridge that must satisfy ALL of the following requirements:
- Total Length (L) from end to end: 350 mm – 500 mm
- Maximum allowed width: 100 mm
- Maximum allowed depth: 20 mm
- Maximum allowed total height: 90 mm
- Maximum weight of structure: 1 Kg
- Must carry a minimum external applied weight of: 5 Kg
- Must have at least 30 mm of flat bearing surfaces at the supports located 350mm apart
- Must be symmetrical along its longitudinal and transverse center lines
- Must be inclusive of a bridge deck with a smooth surface where a toy car/ping pong ball is able to pass without hindrances
COMPETITION PROPER
- Prior to testing, all bridges will be measured and checked to make sure that they passed all the given design and material specifications. Failure to meet any specification requirements shall mean forfeiture from the competition.
- Bridges that passed the initial screening will be judged on aesthetic design category where 1 winner and runner up will be chosen.
- Those that qualified will then proceed to the loading competition. A simplified loading apparatus will be used to test the stiffness and strength of the bridge.
- The top 2 teams that can produce the strongest bridge shall be declared champion and runner-up respectively.
